Kroměříž is one of the most beautiful cities in the Czech Republic. Located in Moravia, in the area of eastern Moravia, although small, it has so many attractions that it would be enough for a few larger centers.

Christian priests were supposed to serve and lead others while remaining humble and poor. The bishops of Olomouc certainly did not follow this principle when they founded Kroměříž in the 13th century. From the very beginning, the huge, monumental summer residence, which was slowly being built, was to be a reflection of their wealth and strength. In Kromeriz itself, there are also buildings that are far from modest and austere. But it is this splendor and momentum of the episcopal city that attracts tourists today.

Kroměříž - the city of flowers

Rich, as befits the baroque style, the Archbishop's Palace is one of the largest, but it can be argued that the greatest tourist attraction in Kromeriz. It depends on whether we are more interested in historic architecture or evidence that man can order nature to take a specific form and delight not only other people, but also nature itself - that is, the Flower Garden , also known as Libosad. It is one of the most important buildings of its kind in the world, combines the style of Italian late-Renaissance gardens and French, designed in the Versailles style. Even the modifications carried out in the following centuries did not diminish its splendor.

Walking through the Flower Garden , we pass sculptures, fountains, ponds and ponds, as well as two historic greenhouses and a central pavilion. Since 2014, visitors have had the opportunity to visit the aviary and meet the eared inhabitants of the Rabbit Hill . Tourists can also use the Dutch and Orange Gardens. In the first one there are over 20,000 bulb flowers, including tulips of various colors, hyacinths and sapphires, while in the second one you can see citrus (including orange trees).

The Palace Garden is also beautiful , which transformed from an ordinary flower and vegetable garden into a complex with a landscape park. His project included, among others river regulation and drainage of the riparian forest.

Admission to the Palace Garden, as in the case of the Flower Garden, costs CZK 70 (discounted CZK 45).

The guilty Palace of the Archbishops

The Flower Garden, the Palace Garden and the Archbishop's Palace itself form a complex that in 1998 was entered on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. The palace is intimidating with its richness from the outside, but its interior is full of splendor. Its visitors can see a gallery of paintings from the 15th-18th centuries. Kromieryż owes it to Bishop Charles II Lichtenstein, who managed to gather the works of, among others, under one roof. van Dyck and Titian.

In Archbishop's Cellars , wines are aged, the taste of which has made the region famous throughout the country - and beyond its borders. And from the palace tower you can see the entire city and its surroundings.

Overnight in Kromeriz

In the heart of Kroměříž there is a 4-star hotel Octárna , apart from accommodation also offering restaurant services (garden with teak armchairs). Guests have at their disposal cozy rooms with Internet access, TV, telephone and minibar. People requiring an air-conditioned room should choose one of the rooms located on the second floor. We will pay 1.900 CZK for a night in a double room.

It is worth to spice up a beautiful Sunday day and go on a family trip to the Czech land of flowers. The more that Kromieryż is so close - it is only 126 km away from Cieszyn.
