Fethiye's bird demons
There is a market in Turkey where we can choose seafood, fish and other sea specialties, and the restaurateur will prepare a dish according to his own recipe. This is a market in Fethiye, the resort where some of the filming for Skyfall was filmed. The James Bond impersonator fell in love with the city without memory.
The Lycian Coast is a region of Turkey with countless attractions. One of its main centers, Fethiye, is very popular among tourists seeking, above all, peace and relaxation. The town is surrounded by mountains and the sea, and its Mediterranean atmosphere allows you to forget about the busy world that you will have to come back to after your holiday.
Things to do in Fethiye
Although there are no beaches in Fethiye itself, the resort has something to attract tourists. The Cragos Mountains surrounding the bay and the blue of the water combined with a slightly sleepy atmosphere create an atmosphere of no rush and distance from the worries of the big world. Today, there are fewer and fewer such places.
Getting to Fethiye is not a problem. There are two coach routes to the city from Antalya: one runs along the coast and the other, which is shorter, is inland. The tourist center is located approximately 5 km from the heart of Fethiye and is called Calis . There are many hotels there, and people staying in them have access to a rocky and gravel beach.
Tourists visiting the city will sooner or later visit the port. It is bustling with life, and apart from fishing cutters and ships, it is also home to dignified yachts. It is also worth taking a walk along the promenade along the port - it will appeal not only to lovers of romantic walks. By the way, it should be mentioned that one of the most attractive hiking trails in Turkey begins in Fethiye, i.e. the Lycian Way , leading through the Taurus Mountains.
Flight on the wings of the bird
This popular Turkish resort is liked especially by lovers of learning about history. Virtually anywhere in Fethiye , we can admire Galician tombs carved in the rocks above the city, dating back to the 4th century BC. The historic attractions of the city also include the ruins of the Roman amphitheater. Fethiye lies on the foundations of ancient Telmessos, the largest city of Lycia. Until 1934 it was called Megri, and the new one was given to it in tribute to pilot Fethi Bey, one of the first to die in the fight for Turkish independence.
According to the Lycian beliefs, after death, the soul moves to the extraterrestrial world thanks to birds (demons who took their form). To facilitate their task, the inhabitants of the region built graves on the tops of high cliffs. Many of them look like houses. The elite ordered large tombs made of pillars, while the less wealthy chose sarcophagi. All the tombs carved into the rocks are decorated with bas-reliefs, most often depicting scenes from the funeral ceremony. One of the most beautiful, and certainly the largest, is Amyntas' tomb.
The silence that amazes the ears of a typical European can also be found approx. 8 km from Fethiye. Kaya is a ghost town (known as the Ghost Town) with nearly 400 empty houses. They were left by the Greeks displaced in 1923. Currently, houses are decaying - they have not been re-inhabited as cursed. You can visit them along a predetermined route (for a fee) or set a route yourself.
Beautiful neighbor
The view of the bay surrounded by a steep mountain range will be remembered by every person who visits Fithye. But these are not all the great views that can be seen here. In the vicinity of the resort, there is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the divine Ölüdeniz. The language of the mainland, a wonderful lagoon and a wide, sandy beach, plus crystal-clear water - in such a neighborhood you can spend the vacation of your life and not miss civilization.
