A holiday at the Austrian lake Millstatt is a guarantee of a wonderful holiday surrounded by nature. One of the many advantages of the reservoir is easy access to the best ski resorts in Carinthia.

Austria has something to tempt tourists. It hides many amazing places, one of them is the beautiful lake Millstatt (Millstätter See), the deepest lake in the country and the second largest lake in Carinthia. It covers an area of 13.3 km² and is named after the town on the northern shore. Its history is interesting – according to the legend, Saint Domitian threw many pagan figurines into the water. In Latin, "mille statuae" means "a thousand statues".

Millstatt is situated in the Central Eastern Alps, in close proximity to the town of Spittal an der Drau. In summer, the temperature on the surface of the lake reaches 25°C, which is due to the protection of the reservoir against cold winds. On the northern side, they are sheltered by mountains.

Attractions of Millstätter See and the surrounding area

The town of Millstatt is one of the most historically and culturally important centers that are located by the lake. From here you can easily reach the best ski resorts in Carinthia, and it also offers visitors a number of attractions at any time of the year. In winter it is i.a. tobogganing, curling, ice skating and cross-country skiing, and in summer, the proximity of the lake allows to practice water sports.

There are many luxury hotels and guesthouses around the reservoir. On the shore there is also Golflage Millstätter See with an 18-hole golf course in an extremely beautiful scenery with views of the mountains.

In the town itself, guests can visit the Stiftsmuseum Millstatt, where visitors can learn about the history of the center. A notable attraction is also the building of the Stiftskirche, a Catholic church. In summer, the city hosts the "Musikwochen Millstatt" – a festival held in the vicinity of the monastery church. Music lovers then have the opportunity to listen to sacred music, as well as classical jazz and organ recitals.

The charms of garnets

Near the town there is Radenthein, which is worth visiting to get to know the Granatium museum. Wandering through dark caves and touching shiny and matte stones, angular and rounded, will take us to the dwarves' treasury from "The Hobbit". As the name suggests, the museum is dedicated to garnets – minerals commonly found in Carinthia. The Granatium exhibition is one of the richest in Europe, and the stones of love come in many types.

Underground there is an illuminated corridor carved in the rock, where you can see garnets in their natural surroundings. The children were also not forgotten. The youngest ones can get their own stone on their own – they have access to a long rock wall with garnets, and there is a small water mill next to the museum, in which the rock is rinsed.

If you're camping, then at Schwimmbad Camping Mössler

Those who do not need to be convinced that it is worth coming here will not have any problems with finding accommodation. It's a great idea to stay at Schwimmbad Camping Mössler. It's not actually a campsite – it's a huge camping town, made for families with children and the elderly. It extends by the lake on an area of over 45,000 m² and has approx. 200 places for guests. All parking spaces have access to electricity, water, TV connection and a drainage system. You can stay overnight here in your own camper, as well as in cozy cottages and caravans.

At the Mössler campsite there is a swimming pool with water at a temperature of 30°C. You can splash in it from May to the end of September. That's not all – tourists have at their disposal a wellness center with a Finnish sauna and a relaxation room, a restaurant and a mini-market. There are several playgrounds for children, and in July and August there are interesting animation programs (from Monday to Saturday).

So there is no need to delay. It's time to plan your holiday at Austria's deepest lake – Millstatt!
