Slow tourism on the shores of Lake Geneva

Slow tourism on the shores of Lake Geneva – main image

The French department of Savoie, located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, abounds in intimate, hermetic villages, often giving the impression that time flows slower in them and the 21st century has not yet reached them. An enthusiast of glass, steel and metal architecture, who loves skyscrapers, shopping centers and loud clubs, and spending his holidays intensively, "ticking off" the main attractions of the area, is unlikely to be here. When, on the other hand, the climate of the French province will meet the supporter of the so-called slow tourism, will come back here more than one and not twice. This is especially true of the southern shores of Lake Geneva, with the majestic peaks of the Savoy Alps decorating the background.

Leisure in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

The campground provides visitors with access to the magnificent Plage d'Excenevex , which stands out among the other beaches that surround the lake with its golden, powdery sand. The gentle descent to the water attracts families with children. Children can safely splash in the shallows, and parents can relax blissfully on the shore with a view of the Alps.

The location on the shores of Lake Geneva is one of La Pinède's most important assets. The lake is a huge tourist attraction, which is proudly boasted by two countries - France and Switzerland. The largest reservoir in the Alps and Western Europe is characterized by an exceptionally intense blue surface, reminiscent of the waters of Mediterranean resorts. The beauty of the lake has been enchanting for centuries. Adam Mickiewicz, who dedicated Lausanne lyric poetry to it. It is impossible to be surprised by the bard, and even less so by tourists who, tempted by the landscapes of Lake Geneva, decide to spend a holiday in France instead of choosing a southern destination.

Slow tourism in a medieval village

In the immediate vicinity of the campsite is Yvoire , a charming village with characteristic medieval architecture. It has touched many hearts with its small port and delighted with the Garden of Five Senses (Le Labyrinthe - Jardin des Cinq Sens), growing in the center. When you look at Yvoire from a bird's-eye view, you will see gray walls covered with joyful bloom, the beating green heart of Cinq Sens and the blue of the lake in the background. While admiring this postcard scenery, you can sigh and think: "What problems may people who live in such a wonderful place have?" Yvoire is called one of the most beautiful French villages for a reason.

Languedoc flowing with wine
Although beautiful and full of magic, Languedoc is not as popular as its sister Provence. This one is associated with lavender fields, blue shutters and landscapes that delighted painters - not only impressionists. Languedoc, on the other hand, remains somewhat in the shadow, although it has a lot to offer. Together with Roussillon, which until recently was a separate province, it forms a vast region encompassing the Pyrenees on the Spanish border and the Rhône estuary in the east. Languedoc-Roussillon is an area extremely diverse geographically and culturally. You can clearly see the Catalan heritage there, starting from painting the houses in vivid colors, through the cuisine (including tapas and bull steaks), and ending with traditions associated more with Spain than France - bullfights. The history of the region is also colorful, although often its main color was blood red. In Prouille , approximately 78 km from Toulouse, the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) was born, from which many inquisitors came. In the region we will find numerous ruins of castles nestled in steep rocks, silent evidence of his cruel activities. The scene of particularly grim events was Béziers , the town where the Cathar massacre took place. Fortunately, it also has a brighter side - Pierre-Paul Riquet, the creator of the Canal du Midi, a water route from the north to the south of France, to the Mediterranean Sea, was born there. What other cities are worth visiting during your holiday in Languedoc-Roussillon ? Certainly the above-mentioned Toulouse with its beautiful Capitol and a number of monuments that cannot be visited in one day, Carcasonne with the largest medieval urban complex in Europe, and Albi, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Narbonne, Nîmes and Montpellier are also worth mentioning.
