The capital of Belgium - Brussels
With the slogan "Brussels", many will probably immediately think about the seat of the institutions of the European Union, NATO and Euratom, the city of officials and businessmen. Overall boredom. Meanwhile, the capital of Belgium has many tourist attractions to offer, a perfectly organized metro and numerous discounts on admission to museums and other places of interest. All this will be provided by the Brussel Card, a card valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours. Thanks to it, we can visit the most interesting places of the city for free, we will receive favorable discounts on paid admissions, and it also serves as a ticket for public transport.
Not so boring Brussels
With the card in hand, we can set off to conquer the city. What is waiting for us? First of all, the magnificent Gothic cathedral of St. Michael and Gudula (Kathedraal van Sint-Michiel en Sint-Goedele). It is located on the Treurenberg hill and can be reached from the Grand Place, admiring the Europe-famous stained glass windows along the way. The cathedral impresses visitors with its delicious, slender façade, monumental organs by Gerhard Grenzig in the nave, as well as the Renaissance altar of the Lord's Passion in the presbytery. Another city attraction is not to be missed, St. Hubert's Passage with its wonderful vaulted ceiling. Its beauty was duly appreciated - in 2008 it was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the passage you will find cafes and numerous luxury shops full of souvenirs and exclusive jewelry.
Brussels symbols
You can't leave Brussels without seeing its most famous inhabitant. For who does not know the "peeing boy" Manneken Pis? It is not easy to find, even if you follow the signs. It's better to just watch the crowds - where we see a larger group of people, our little boy will probably be there as well. Coming from Grand Place, you will see it on the left. As it has become a tradition that foreign delegates visiting the city bring clothes to the statue, sometimes it can be seen in its original clothing. She even wore a traditional Krakow costume.
The aforementioned Grand Place is a place with many restored buildings. As a result, it is one of the most picturesque squares in Europe. Tourists are delighted, among others, by the 14th-century city hall built in the Gothic style, as well as the residence of the Spanish kings, Maison du Roi from the 16th century. In 1993, the complex of monuments in the square was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Another symbol of Bruseli after Manneken Pis is undoubtedly the Atomium - a huge model of an iron crystal, built in 1958 for the EXPO World Exhibition. It is located in the Laeken district, in the suburbs. There are also two interesting objects left after the EXPO: the Japanese tower and the Chinese pagoda, both worthy of attention. In summer, especially at weekends, festivals and various types of cultural events take place in the EXPO zone.
Near the Atomium there is an amusement park, liked by families with children. Not only the youngest will enjoy the Mini Europe, where you can see all European monuments on a micro scale. It is also worth visiting the Brussels Oceanarium, and if you want to provide yourself with water-related entertainment throughout the day, you can take advantage of the offer of the adjacent Aquapark Assessment.
Campsites nearby
If you want to stay as close to the city as possible, consider Camping Caravaning Club Brussels (Warandeberg 52, 1970 Wezembeek-Oppem). This campsite is perfectly adapted to the needs of the disabled, it has a playground for children and a games room. There is also a jeu de boule track and a sports field. The campsite is open from 01/04 to 30/09, and the approximate price of accommodation for two people who came with a camper oscillates between 21-28 EUR / day.
Another interesting place is the campsite Grimbergen (Veldkantstraat 64, 1850 Grimbergen), located near Brussels. Here, two people will pay between 22 and 25 euro / day for a night. Guests have at their disposal a laundry room, a tumble dryer, and those staying at the campsite can also see the rich offer of the restaurant and shop, where fresh bread is delivered daily in summer. Less than 1 km from the campsite there is a tourist attraction that attracts visitors - Thermae Boetfort, a SPA center where the whole family can use the sauna, swimming pools and enjoy various types of massages.
Another campsite is worth paying attention to - Bergendal (Biezenstraat 81, 3040 Loonbeek). It is located a bit further from Brussels, and you have to pay about 18.20 euro / day for a stay (two people, a place for a camper and access to electricity). The owners accept quadrupeds and the whole area is quiet, peaceful and situated in the woods. Marked hiking trails start right next to the campsite, and several bicycle routes begin.
Chocolate souvenirs from Brussels
When we finish exploring the city and try to go home, we absolutely need to buy a box of Belgian chocolates. Because you have to remember - those who have not had the opportunity to taste them do not know what really good sweets taste like. With Belgian ambrosia at hand, we can leave Brussels. Memories will be wonderfully sweet.
