Sightseeing in Sankt Pölten

Sankt Pölten is a town with a population of 50,000 and boasts the oldest written municipal rights in Austria. Its history dates back to the Roman Empire - at the turn of the last and present era it was an important strategic center in the conquest of the north. After the fall of the empire, the city lost its position within a few centuries. It was only thanks to the Augustinian Order that Sankt Pölten returned to history and acquired city rights in the 12th century. Currently, it is the cultural and economic center of the region that can be visited in a few hours. Lovers of history and architecture will be delighted as you traverse the streets. It is worth starting your tour from the town hall square, where the 18th-century Holy Trinity Column stands.

The cathedral square is home to the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the main temple of the diocese. From every point of Sankt Pölten you can see the onion-shaped dome crowning the 74-meter tower. Those seeking respite will find it in the Kamptal Gardens , surrounding the Grafenegg Castle. It is a great place for a picnic, often visited by tourists during their vacation in Lower Austria . Next to the historic part of the city lies the Landhausviertel, the youngest district and at the same time an important center of the state's government. It consists entirely of modern public buildings, office buildings and residential houses. It was established at the end of the 20th century, following the establishment of the city as the capital of a federal state. Apart from the governmental and residential infrastructure, the region is also a cultural center. It houses the Museum of Lower Austria, and the neo-modernist Klangturm building is also located in the district. The 77-meter high observation tower with acoustic chambers is a big attraction for many tourists, providing interesting experiences - both auditory and visual.
