Where can we buy tasty pasteis de nata or fresh olives? At the market in Faro, a resort on the south coast of Portugal. In addition to delicious cupcakes, the silence of the old town, the beauty of the marina and the divine view of the beach await us.

Faro is a great starting point for exploring southern Portugal. It is situated at the mouth of the Formosa River into the Atlantic Ocean. It has been the capital of the Algarve region since the 18th century, and is also the capital of the district of the same name.

Sea breeze

As one of the most attractive bathing areas in the region, Faro has been enjoying a growing interest among tourists for several decades. Despite the fact that Lagos, located a short distance, can be much more noisy and noisy, the beauty of the beaches has just attracted attention. Wide, wide, with golden sand and great ocean views. A crisp breeze blows through the body, and the humidity of the climate has a great effect on the respiratory system.

Funnily enough, Faro doesn't have a city beach directly. The coast near the city consists of two long, slender peninsulas and a series of smaller and larger islands forming a tangle of coves and canals. To get to the main beach, Praia de Faro , you have to go to the Ancão Peninsula, stretching on the west side of the resort. It also includes smaller islands, including Deserta (Barreta), where you can find several romantic and rarely visited places. We get here by boats that run frequently from Faro.

The charms of Mercado Municipal

In the resort, tourists can find shops and boutiques, cafes, restaurants and a lot of bars. Of course, you can take advantage of their offer - but you can also see the place where "natives" do their shopping. With a place where the variety of goods, and at the same time their freshness, the intensity of smells and flavors, can make you dizzy. There is an indoor market at Largo Doutor Francisco Sá Carneiro, the Mercado Municipal . In a closed space, between 7.00 a.m. and 3 p.m., you can buy products that you will not find in an average store. The pasteis de nata is definitely worth trying. These are tiny cupcakes filled with creamy filling, a Portuguese delicacy.

If, on the other hand, someone is willing to do non-food shopping, they can look for luck on Rua de Santo Antonio . The street is pedestrianized, so you can walk along it without fear, visiting every boutique, shop with traditional ceramics or souvenirs.

Wonders of nature

The surroundings of Faro will delight every nature lover. Near the resort, on an area of 170 km², lies the beautiful Parque Natural da Ria Formosa . It is situated at the mouth of the Ria River to the ocean, encompassing over 60 km of the coastline. You can admire its beauty from the boat - the prices of wooden boat trips start from 10 euros. The park serves as a bird stop on the route from the north of the continent to Africa.

Pego do Inferno , a magnificent waterfall located near Tavira, is of exceptional beauty. Its romantic scenery seems to be perfect for a date - in this picturesque corner you can stare at the rustling cascades of water for hours.

During your stay in the Algarve, you can visit the breeding farm of brilliant swimmers and divers. The region is considered the home of the Portuguese water dog breed, the quadrupeds with a mane that covers the eyes. They are inseparable companions of fishermen, keepers of boats and property.

Camping in Faro

About 2 km west of Faro is Camping Orbitur Quarteira . The cost of a day stay for 2 people who came with a motorhome ranges from 20 to 30 euro (depending on the season). We will pay 3.6 euros for the use of electricity. You can take your pet on the campsite (its stay costs 1.1 euro per day). It is worth spending at least a few days here.

A stay in Faro will appeal to lovers of good cuisine and quiet sunbathing on a beach blown by the ocean wind. After relaxing, you can move on along the coast, remembering the taste of fresh pasteis de nata.
