Campervan vacations are incredibly popular. You gain complete independence, and all the necessary infrastructure, such as a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, is always at your fingertips. You can also combine caravanning with cycling to discover completely new trails far from civilization. Read on to learn which bike to take with you on your trip.

How to safely transport a bike in a camper?

There are two main ways to safely transport two wheels when caravanning.

The first is to store the bike in the cargo hold (if it's high enough). Stabilize the bike using a ramp with wheel locks and three- or four-point straps. This solution effectively protects the bike from unfavorable weather conditions and minimizes the risk of theft.

If there's not enough space inside, you can also mount a bike rack outside. The racks are mounted on the roof or, as ladders, on the tailgate. In the latter case, ensure the rack has sufficient vertical load capacity, especially if you're carrying more than one bike. You may also need an additional license plate if the bikes obscure the main registration plate of the camper.

If you decide to transport your e-bike on an external rack, remember to remove the battery and store it inside the cabin. Low or excessively high temperatures can negatively impact the battery's capacity and overall performance.

Which bike should you choose for caravanning?

If you're planning to combine a campervan holiday with excursions, it's worth choosing equipment that maximizes the region's tourist potential. Cyclists typically opt for road bikes (or more off-road gravel bikes) or mountain bikes. Electric bikes with built-in power assist are also very popular.

Road bikes

We recommend road bike models primarily to those who enjoy fast riding on asphalt. Depending on the geometry, there are versions for long-distance riding ( endurance road bikes ), machines designed for racing (racing), and time trial/TT variants, distinguished by maximum aerodynamics.

Experienced cyclists often choose Trek Madone road bikes . Lance Armstrong and Mads Pedersen have won prestigious competitions on these bikes. Lightweight and equipped with the latest technological advancements, Trek Madones leave the competition far behind. Check out their carbon frames, advanced Di2 electronic drivetrains, and aerodynamic features like the Full System Foil.

If you prefer a comfortable ride over longer distances, choose the Trek Domane AL2 . The lightweight aluminum frame and proven Shimano Claris drivetrain are a great start to your cycling adventure.

Mountain bikes

For more challenging terrain, we recommend Trek's Procaliber 9.6 or Procaliber 9.7 hardtails. With a super-light OCLV Mountain Composite frame, SRAM Eagle drivetrain, and RockShox suspension, these bikes can handle technical XC courses that require agility and excellent riding technique. You'll also appreciate them on rooty forest trails and off-road terrain.

Choosing an MTB is a bull's eye if you park your camper in the middle of nowhere and know that you'll need solid equipment on the trails.

Or maybe an electrician?

Instead of a traditional two-wheeler powered solely by muscle power, you can choose an electric bike . Equipped with a motor and a powerful battery, it provides pedaling assistance, for example, on difficult terrain or against strong winds. It's a great choice if you enjoy cycling but don't necessarily want to push yourself to the limit.

An e-bike's performance is primarily determined by the drive unit's torque. Mountain bikes often have torque of around 85 Nm or more. This is the amount of power needed to dynamically conquer demanding, steep climbs. Road bikes typically have torque of around 40–45 Nm.
