Road tolls in Slovenia

Road tolls in Slovenia – main image

Crossing road borders in the European Union is simple and uncomplicated, but some issues require additional preparation. One of them is driving on highways in different countries. This usually involves the need to pay specific fees, as is the case, for example, in Slovenia. What are the regulations like in this country?

Vignettes in Slovenia – from 2024 only in electronic form

Depending on the country, vignettes take different forms. The traditional option is a physical sticker placed on the vehicle's windshield, which is, however, increasingly replaced by e-vignettes. One of the examples of countries that decided to make such a change is Slovenia. The e-vignette system was introduced gradually from the end of 2021, and from February 2024 this form is the only available form of vignette in Slovenia. This means that drivers can no longer purchase a sticker authorizing them to drive on toll roads - instead, vehicle information is saved in an electronic database.

E-vignettes are sold at Slovenian gas stations and are also available for purchase online. They can be found, among others: on dedicated portals such as Wizax. It is worth deciding to purchase online to be able to better plan your trip and avoid potential consequences related to the lack of a vignette, because fines may be imposed immediately after crossing the border. Toll roads in Slovenia

Before planning a route through Slovenia, it is worth finding out which sections require vignettes. The toll road system includes motorways and expressways, marked with the letters A (A1 to A5) and H (H3 to H7 - the H1 and H2 roads have been converted into sections of motorways or regional roads), respectively. In the case of international routes, you should pay particular attention to roads that start from border crossings:

  • A1 – border with Austria (Šentilj);
  • A2 – border with Austria (tunnel under Karawanki) and with Croatia (Obrežje);
  • A3 – border with Italy (Fernetiči);
  • A4 – border with Croatia (Zgornje Gruškovje);
  • A5 – border with Hungary (Pince);
  • H4 – border with Italy (Vrtojba);
  • H5 – border with Croatia (Dragonja);
  • H7 – border with Hungary (Dolga vas).

Classes of vehicles subject to the obligation to have an e-vignette

The e-vignette system in Slovenia distinguishes three basic categories of vehicles:

  • class 1A – two-wheelers (e.g. motorcycles) whose tire width does not exceed 50 cm;
  • class 2A - vehicles whose permissible total weight does not exceed 3.5 tons and the height from the front axle is a maximum of 1.3 meters (i.e. most passenger vehicles, SUVs, minivans and campers regardless of the height of the vehicle above the front axle ) ;
  • class 2B - vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons, but with a height above the front axle greater than 1.3 m (including light trucks, delivery vehicles).

In the case of vehicles over 3.5 tons, another payment system called DarsGo is used. To use it, you must order the device in advance via the system website. The toll collection device can be collected by post or at service points located at gas stations on Slovenian highways.

What vignette for a camper in Slovenia in 2024?

Campers with a GVW of up to 3.5t that travel on Slovenian roads must purchase an A2 category vignette, even if the height of the vehicle above the front axle is more than 1.3m. The condition is to have an entry in the registration certificate that it is a camping vehicle .

What is the vignette for a caravan in Slovenia in 2024?

In Slovenia, it is enough for the towing vehicle to have a vignette. There is no need to purchase additional vignettes for a trailer.

A valuable vignette in Slovenia in 2024

Regardless of the vehicle category, vignettes are available in three variants - with weekly, monthly and annual validity. Here are the prices in 2024:

  • category 1A – PLN 50 for a 7-day vignette and PLN 290.50 for an annual vignette;
  • category 2A – PLN 102 for a 7-day vignette, PLN 208 for a monthly vignette and PLN 609 for an annual vignette;
  • category 2B – PLN 183 for a 7-day vignette, PLN 365 for a monthly vignette and PLN 1,125 for an annual vignette.

In the DarsGo system, payment for driving on the highway is calculated according to distance, and an administrative fee must be paid. Driving through the tunnel under Karawanki (border with Austria) is associated with an additional fee of EUR 8.20 for vehicles up to 3.5 t (payment made at the toll station near the tunnel). The fine for not having a vignette is EUR 300 and can be imposed immediately after crossing the border - so it is worth taking care of this issue before leaving.
