Oslo is not that bad in winter

The winter temperature in Norway is not spoiling, but it is worth considering a trip to Oslo at this time. I have been twice in the winter periods (in November and December) and I highly recommend Scandinavia at this time. It is enough to pack warm clothes in a suitcase and you can enjoy the beautiful Norwegian winter. If we also get sunny weather, we will not feel cold at all. If Norwegian preschoolers spend their days outside, so can we!

Walking around the city there is a lot to warm up. At the royal castle, on the Christmas market, you will find metal baskets with burning wood, in the port - a tipi with a fire inside, and in front of each restaurant you can drink coffee under the radiators. Interestingly, coffee in a restaurant in the port, which is the most expensive district of Oslo (and one of the most expensive in Europe), costs the same as on the market in Krakow !.

Cheaper in winter

The great advantage of a winter trip to Oslo is that most of the museums at that time are available for free to visitors . Accommodation during this time is also cheaper. You can take a reindeer sleigh on Karl Johans Gate. In winter, there are other activities available as well, such as the fact that the fountains all over the city are turned into ice rinks, which you can use for free. It is also an opportunity to watch the Holmenkollen ski jumping competition live.

If someone is not a fan of ski jumping, it is still worth going to Holmenkollen and seeing the wonderful panorama of the city from this place.

What is worth seeing

You have to remember that the day at this time is short (at the beginning of December it gets dark at around 3 p.m.), so you need to plan your sightseeing well if you only have a few days to do so.

  • Van Gogh Museum - after entering the museum, it is worth going to the cinema room, where various films about the artist's life and work are shown every 15 minutes. After a short visit to the cinema, we will get a better understanding of the rest of the exhibition.
  • Astrup Feamley Contemporary Art Museum - In the museum, you can see works by artists such as Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol. The museum is worth visiting for the sake of the building itself. It was designed in such a way as to expose in and on the light, which is very scarce in Norway. They were designed by the world-famous architect Renzo Piano, who has designed the largest museums in the world such as.
  • Museum of bottles - you can literally walk into a copy of a bottle of a well-known brand of vodka;)
  • Port - you can see some of the most expensive apartments in Europe.
  • Fram Museum - there is a ship from the expedition to the North Pole. Before visiting the museum, it is worth reading this history and watching the Discovery documentary, in which scientists try to recreate the race of the British and Norwegian people to the North Pole in the current conditions

When it comes to getting around the city, Oslo is so small that you can visit everything on foot, but you can easily get everywhere by public transport (metro, trams, buses). (We will pay about PLN 15 for a one-time ride by public transport)

In free time

Eating in restaurants in Oslo is a big expense, but you can always go to one of these restaurants for a colorful drink. I recommend SüdØst Asian Crossover and other pubs in this district - Grünerløkka (a bit further from the center, but definitely cheaper). You must try the delicious Norwegian salmon sushi at the sushi bars that can be found on every corner in the city.

For fans of winter sports, I recommend the ski slope just a few kilometers from the city center. You can get there by metro!

If you are music lovers, you can plan your trip to Oslo and go to a concert there. Artists that we will not see in Poland often appear there, and tickets cost the same as with us. We went to the Lady Gaga concert, where we celebrated my birthday with the most expensive beer (PLN 40) in plastic :)
