14 of the best campgrounds in Tuscany and Umbria

14 of the best campgrounds in Tuscany and Umbria – main image

From my observations, you either love Tuscany or you hate it. The latter may be due to the fact that a holiday in Tuscany for a camper driver can often be very stressful. Narrow, winding streets without a shoulder, where it is often difficult to pass each other, as well as narrow parking lots are standard in this part of Italy. However, we had quite a good time driving the camper in Tuscany and one thing is certain: you won't see such views anywhere else in Italy! Additionally, I am adding to this list a few campsites in Umbria , which are located quite close to the border with Tuscany and are a great base for visiting its southern part. And also two campsites on Elba . When choosing campsites in Tuscany, remember that the sun shines on Elba 200 days a year! It's really worth going there, even just for one day. But first I'll start with the heart of Tuscany.

Camping Firenze – Tuscany, Florence

Camping Firenze

Two years ago there was a camper park in this place, and now there is a 4-star campsite in the city center! Because Camping Firenze is located only 4 km from Ponte Vecchio, to which a bus leaves the campsite every day. If you miss the bus departure time, it doesn't matter, because the campsite is also close to a public bus stop (500m), from which the bus takes you to the very center of Florence. You can also reach the center by bike - your own or rented at the campsite - along the bike path that is right next to the campsite and runs along the Arno River. New toilets, a new store building, a gelateria with home-made ice cream and brand new swimming pools!

Activities for children at the Firenze campsite

There are two swimming pools at the campsite, including one with a soft, non-slip bottom, perfect for children. There is also a small playground .

Where to eat in Florence?

There is a great restaurant and pizzeria at the campsite. They also brew their beer here. If you want to eat here, be sure to book a place in advance. If you want to eat in the center of Florence , I especially recommend: Enoteca Pinchior. In 2008, this restaurant was ranked 32nd among the best in the world. In this place, wine with dinner will definitely be a perfect match.

It is also worth going to the so-called aperitivo, where you only pay for alcohol and get small snacks for free.

What to see in Florence?

It is especially worth climbing the hill and Michelangelo Square , from where you can see the entire panorama of the city. If you have the opportunity, go there at sunset or even after dark. It is also worth climbing the Duomo tower and, of course, Ponte Vecchio .

We especially recommend eating beef here. It is worth going for the famous ice cream in San Gimignano to the Gelateria Dondoli ice cream parlor.

Where the dice were thrown
Alea iacta est ("The dice were cast") - history tells us that Julius Caesar uttered these words over 2,000 years ago, crossing the Rubicon River. The event started a bloody civil war that torn the Roman republic over the years. Rubicon formed the natural border of Italy with Pre-Alpine Gaul. The passing of Caesar and his army to the other side was tantamount to a declaration of war. It didn't take long for the waters of the river to run down with blood. Centuries have passed since the events that changed the history of the country known today as Italy . Nowadays, Rubicon no longer creates a border, the crossing of which is associated with making decisions of great importance. Today it is simply a small river flowing from the Northern Apennines to the Adriatic Sea, winding through northern Italy and ending its way at Gatteo A Mare. While exploring the estuary on foot, we come across a bronze bust of Julius Caesar, reminding us of the famous words spoken by the river. Fortunately, today we can cross the Rubicon without getting our feet wet by crossing the wooden suspension bridge. On the other side is the charming seaside resort of Savignano Mare - perfect for a family holiday . Not only people who want to relax by the warm sea come here, but also tourists who want to get to know as many attractions as possible in this part of the Italian coast in their vacation plans. And it must be admitted that it is a great base for visiting nearby resorts. The town is just 5 km away from Cesenatico, with its stunning port, which was said to be designed by the master himself, Leonardo da Vinci, and the charming old town that surrounds it. From Rimini, which is well-deserved as one of the most famous holiday resorts not only on the Adriatic Riviera, but on the whole of Italy - 12 km. Riccione, known as the Green Pearl of the Adriatic, is 25 km away. Further on, there are centers of great historical and cultural importance - including Ravenna, Florence and Venice.
