The Venetian Lagoon is located in the north-eastern part of Italy, between the mainland and the waters of the Adriatic Sea. Half of this area is laguna viva, or a living lagoon open to the sea. The rest, closer to the land, is laguna morta (dead), which is made up of islets and shoals. The most important islands of the Venetian Lagoon are Murano, Burano and Torcello, as well as the Lido, which is home to the famous Venice Film Festival.

Sailing takes place along canals delineated by nature and deepened to a depth of 10 m. The banks of these canals are marked with pine piles, additionally decorated with small chapels or lanterns.
