Vis-à-vis Vis
If you are a fan of fish dishes, like good wine and ballet, you should visit the island of Vis. At the end of the season, a great ballet concert takes place there with the participation of the International Ballet School. Holidays on Vis are a guarantee of relaxation and beautiful memories.
Vis is the ninth largest Croatian island. At the same time, it is the only inhabited island in Dalmatia, which is so far out to sea - it is approximately 45 km from the mainland. There are no lakes or rivers on it, and drinking water comes from springs around Komiža, one of the two largest towns on the island. The second is Vis, from which ferries run to the mainland.
The first grapevine of antiquity
Vis is beautifully covered with lush vegetation - including palm trees and grapevines. The cultivation of the latter has been practiced on the island since ancient times. Moreover, according to various sources, the ancient Greeks planted the first grapevine plant on Vis .
In addition, the inhabitants have long been engaged in large-scale fishing. Their enthusiasm for this profession earned them the reputation of being the best fishermen of all Mediterranean ports. When visiting Komiža, it is worth going to the Fisheries Museum and seeing numerous exhibits related to the history of this craft. Nowadays, there are large fishing grounds within the town of Vis, thanks to which the whole family livens on fishing, and tourists enjoy the delicious taste of the dishes served in the local restaurants. In addition, in virtually each of them you can try white wine called Vugana - the most famous on the island.
Holidays for active people
The town of Vis is situated in a deep bay in the south-eastern part of the island. It was created as a result of the merger of two settlements of Luka and Kut, caused by the construction of the temple of Our Lady of the Cave ( Gospa od Spilica ). The name of the church comes from the numerous caves under the foundations. Inside the building, you can see five altars, tombstones of nobility, writers and clergy. The temple itself stands on the site of the former settlement border.
There are many ways to relax in Vis in summer. Holidaymakers who want to spend their holidays actively will be especially satisfied - there is a sports and recreation center with several pitches, there are also diving centers and several sailing clubs at the disposal of tourists.
Nobody will be bored outside the city. You can ride a bike with dozens of attractive tourist routes, people can also go mountain climbing. Tourists who prefer lazily catching a tan can lie on the beaches for hours. They can choose, among others Prena, Rukavac, Rogačić and Zaglav, as well as the Kamenica beach.
Flora and Vis caves
Apart from grapevines and palms, Vis has a huge variety of plant species, including orchids, alpine pine, holly oak and heather. You can also see the noble laurel and capers here.
The island's caves, formed in dolomites and limestones from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, are also interesting. The most famous is the Titova cave , which served as a shelter for the Yugoslav leader during World War II. The Plava, Krajlična and Zelena caves on the islet of Ravnik are also noteworthy.
Modra Špilja , a cave on the islet of Biševo, is unique in its beauty. As long as the wave is not too strong, you can enter it by boat. Everyone will be delighted with the blue light that gently illuminates the interior. It's a magical place.
Let's meet on Vis!
Vis is surrounded by a crystal clear sea and it is home to many Renaissance summer residences and religious monuments. When we add lush flora, the charm of coves and the mystery of caves to it, it is difficult to understand why the island is not crowded with tourists. On the other hand, it can be said that we should be grateful for the many years of military isolation that has saved nature from being trampled on.
