Volkswagen T5 - Doubleback
Doubleback - a motorhome at your fingertips
That's right - just stretch out your hand and press a button, and after 45 seconds, a car that looks like a regular Volkswagen T5 will extend and rise upwards. The Danbury Motorcaravans vehicle is a bold cross between a van and a motorhome.
Although the British invented the Doubleback version, it is not the first construction of this type in the world. Previously, telescopically enlarged vehicles were used in the military. The difference, of course, is in the application. Doubleback was developed for completely peaceful purposes - thanks to it we can go on a picnic and relax almost as well, as in a motorhome.
Two meters more
However, the disclaimer of "almost" is important. Even after the 2-meter part of the car is pulled out, the T5 is not a very spacious motorhome . It will always be only a modest alternative to a real motorhome or caravan.
But to call this car only a substitute for a motorhome would also be unfair. The Doubleback model includes a kitchen area with a stove and sink, a 50-liter fridge (with an ice container), a wardrobe, a folding table, and a clothes container. Unfortunately, there is no bathroom.
Depending on the configuration, Doubleback can accommodate four or even five people. However, it will be difficult for five passengers to fit into two beds. One is located in the retractable part of the cabin, the other under the raised ceiling.
Bed or surfboard
Even when the rear is extended, both the sliding side doors and the rear sliding door can be opened without any problems. And such convenient access to space is tempting to use the space other than for a bed. Therefore, part of the cabin can also become a garage for a bicycle, motorcycle or surfboard.
The manufacturer dedicates this vehicle to active people. It was not intended as a motorhome for two weeks with your family, but rather as a car for spontaneous camping or sports trips - e.g. for surfers. An easy-to-drive, small-size car is perfect for such purposes.
Buy it or remake
The basic version of the Doubleback is the model with a powerful 2.0 TDI, developing 140 HP. It is not very much, but note that the sliding part is made of light composites and the lifting roof is made of fabric, so the car is not much heavier than the standard T5.
In Great Britain, Doubleback costs 55 thousand. pounds . However, it is also possible to deliver your own car with a conversion order. Such an upgrade comes at a cost equivalent to a new, standard Volkswagen.
All in all, the Doubleback is an interesting vehicle, but it is intended for a fairly narrow group of customers. However, for people who would like to drive a van on a daily basis and spend their weekends in nature, this car can be successfully recommended.
