How to spend a week on Lake Ledro in the Garda Trentino region
Peace, nature and active recreation – these are the first things that come to mind when we think about the Garda Trentino region. Lake Ledro seems to embody all of this. Below we will suggest how you can actively spend a week of your holiday on this lake.
At first glance, there are fewer tourists here than in Garda, but don't be fooled – this place is equally popular, and the high season lasts from May to October. Therefore, if you want to be sure of a place at a specific campsite, it is better to book your stay in advance.
Garda Guest Card
Wherever you sleep, ask for a Garda Guest Card. This card entitles you to discounts in many places. Thanks to it, you can also use public transport for free. If any of the attractions I mentioned are free with this card, I will describe it. The card is virtual, you download the application and enter a special code that you receive when checking in at the campsite. The card is accompanied by a map of attractions with marked points where the card is valid.
Garda Trentino Experience
Before I go on to describe the proposals for spending time on Lake Ledro day by day, I will tell you about what's new in the GardaTrentino.it offer. From this year, you can use the website to book participation in such experiences, such as stargazing with an astrologer, cheese making at a local inn, dinner on a sailboat, collecting herbs and cooking your lunch together with the chef, etc.
When in the Garda Trentino region, check the website in advance to see what experiences are available during your stay. The offer of these attractions is constantly expanding, but some attractions are available, for example, only once a week.
Rest at Lake Ledro – Day 1
On your first day at Lake Ledro, relax by the water. There is still a lot of activity waiting for you throughout the week. In several places on the lake you can rent water equipment: kayaks, SUPs, pedal boats. We rented kayaks at Camping Al Sole. The other day we rented a pedal boat at Camping Al Lago.
Descriptions of campsites in this region can be found in a separate article: "The best campsites in the Garda Trentino region".
If you choose the Best Ledro Camping campsite for your stay, we recommend taking a walk that day to the famous "bench" located just above the campsite. If you continue along this trail, you will reach the statue of Madonnina di Besta.
Madonnina di Besta:
We recommend eating dinner at the Al Sole campsite. They have delicious pizza here!
By bike to the Val Concei valley in Garda Trentino – Day 2
On the second day at Lake Ledro, we suggest going on a bike trip to the Val Concei valley. On the website gardatrentino.it you will find suggestions for walking tours in this region. We, however, went on this trip on bikes because we wanted to start from Camping Al Sole and we wanted to reach a few other places.
There is a shelter at the end of the Val Concei valley, but for lunch we recommend returning to the town and eating at Albergo Maggiorina. After lunch, go to the Gorg d'Abbi waterfall. We had electric bikes, so we also made a loop to Chiesa San Giorgio. Attention! There are some steep climbs here.
Back at the campsite, stop by the local brewery Birrificio Leder. We recommend eating dinner right at the campsite at the Steak House Sole restaurant or going to the La Dasa agritourism farm. We wrote more about these places in the article: "Where to eat on Lake Garda and Lake Ledro in Garda Trentino".
"Nature at your table" – collecting herbs and cooking with the chef – Day 3
Today is definitely a quieter day. After breakfast, set off again towards the Val Concei valley. "Nature at your table" is the first of three events we managed to experience in this region. You can only book this experience directly on the website www.gardatrentino.it. What does the whole event look like? At 10.00 you meet the chef (and guide) in front of the Elda Hotel. Then you go to the surrounding meadows.
You collect herbs and flowers in your basket and listen to about different plants. You will learn which plants and their parts can be eaten and which are inedible or even poisonous. Together you look for the prettiest specimens and use them to cook something later.
We collected, among others: thyme, elderberry flowers, fresh coniferous shoots. We added blanched leaves to cod rolls, spruce shoots to potato pancakes, and clover flowers – for fresh cabbage salad. For dessert there was crème brulee with elderflowers and spruce tea/infusion.
We highly recommend this event. Currently, it takes place only once a week – on Thursdays.
Wakeboard on Lake Ledro in the Garda Trentino region – Day 4
Start this very dynamic day with a visit to... the museum. More specifically, the open-air museum Museo delle Palafitte del Lago di Ledro, entry to which is free upon presentation of the Garda Guest Card. There is a very interesting history behind this place – you will learn everything there. You will spend about 30 minutes in the museum. From there it's very close to the wakeboard lift. However, we recommend riding bikes around the lake on this day.
Wakeboarding at the Be Wake school takes place on the 2.0 lift. What does it mean? You swim between two points – back and forth. This type of lift is the easiest when it comes to learning wakeboarding, because only one person is swimming on the lift at a time. The lift is booked for 15-minute periods. I highly recommend this place to everyone, both those who want to start swimming and those who have already swam and are looking for a greater dose of adrenaline during their holidays.
It is most profitable to rent a whole wakeboard for an hour with several people, because after about 10 minutes of swimming your hands are tired. With several people you can change more often and simply make the most of this time.
You'll definitely be hungry after wakeboarding, so I suggest cycling from here to Camping Al Lago. They have a great and nicely located restaurant there. You don't have to be a guest of the campsite to use it. And who knows, maybe you will like the camping so much that you will book your stay here next time?
After lunch, I recommend going to Pieve and renting pedal boats.
I recommend eating dinner at Osteria La Torre, located in the heart of the old town. We wrote more about this place in the article: "Where to eat on Lake Garda and Lake Ledro in Garda Trentino".
Walk among sculptures and Stargazing Experience – Day 5
The start-up Ledro Land Art has been operating on Lake Ledro since 2012, which aims to connect local artists and passionate people with residents and tourists. As they write about themselves, Ledro Land Art is "an outdoor laboratory where workshops and cultural events take place. From upcycling, through theater, art and collective works, to great events such as the Ledro Land Art Experience and the Ledro Land Art Festival.”
As you'll see on the Garda Trentino website, walking the entire park to see all the installations is a short distance that can easily be covered even on a hot day. Entry to the park is free, but you can drop donations into the box. You can buy cold drinks before entering the park.
Ledro Land Art organizes a lot of events in its park, and once every two weeks you can sign up for a stargazing workshop that they organize in Tremalzo.
Stargazing may sound a bit cliché, but it is a very rich experience worth devoting an entire day to. To take part in the "stargazing experience", you must reserve a place in advance at www.gardatrentino.it. Meetings are held only on selected Fridays of the month.
The entire event is organized by true astronomy enthusiasts. They know the answers to all your questions about space, but from the beginning – what does such an event look like?
First, you need to go to the Tremalzo peak – the exact coordinates are provided on the event website. There you meet in a shelter where you can have something to drink before the event (the drink is included in the ticket price). Then, around 9:30 p.m., everyone moves to the clearing, where the organizers have already placed a tarp for lying down and a few telescopes for observing the sky.
We were here at the beginning of June – it was getting dark quite late, but the moon was very visible at that time, so as long as there were no stars visible – we talked a lot about the moon. We could also take a photo. Our instructor spoke excellent English and described various phenomena in detail and in an accessible way. He was happy to answer questions and we all agreed that he did it with incredible passion.
Be sure to take warmer clothes and a blanket. Our event lasted until midnight. Take this into account, because you still have to go down the serpentines.
If you want to get here earlier in the day, this place is perfect for hiking and cycling.
Picnic in Comano – Day 6
Terme di Comano is a town famous for its thermal springs, a beautiful park stretching along a crystal-clear stream and plenty of hiking and cycling trails in the area.
We chose a quiet day in the park. First, we went to a local store to pick up picnic packages. This lunch can be booked in advance on the official Garda Trentino website. Our lunch consisted of sandwiches, yogurt with homemade marmalade, natural juice and water. The package includes a map with the best places where you can have a picnic. Don't forget to bring a picnic blanket!
After dinner, it is worth going to Bosco Arto Scenico. On the Garda Trentino website you will find a detailed description of this trip.
We also ate dinner in Terme di Comano, in the Grand Hotel restaurant, which is located right next to the park where we had a picnic. The restaurant only offers tasting menus – different ones every day. A great place to celebrate an important occasion.
Maybe a few more days on Lake Garda?
If you have more days off, after relaxing on Lake Ledro, move to Garda for a few days. We chose one day in Arco and one day in Riva del Garda. See how to plan a two-day stay in this region.
One day in Arco in Garda Trentino
Arco is a paradise for people who love active recreation. You can access the hiking and cycling trails practically from the campsite itself. There are also many places for climbing in this place. Lake Garda is only 7 km away and you can get there, among others: a safe and nice bicycle path along the Sarca River.
In Arco, we recommend accommodation at Camping Zoo Arco. Arco is also a good alternative to the crowded campsites closer to Lake Garda, but this location is popular in its own right, so we recommend booking pitches and holiday cottages in advance.
Start your day in Arco with a walk to the castle. In the northern part of the town, first you need to find the picturesque Via Stranforia street, which leads to the castle. At this point you will see signs directing you to the castle. At the top there is a place to relax with a beautiful view. There is a small cafe with ice cream.
Entry to the castle is free with a Garda Guest Card.
We recommend eating lunch at the Arco Zoo campsite, and if you feel like going for a walk after lunch, we recommend a short trip among the rocks. Details can be found on the Garda Trentino website.
We recommend eating dinner at the Alla Lega restaurant in the center of Arco. We wrote more about this place in the article: "Where to eat on Lake Garda and Lake Ledro in Garda Trentino".
One day in Riva del Garda and Torbole in the Garda Trentino region
If you want to spend an active holiday on Lake Garda, we recommend staying at Camping Brione. In the morning, hop on your bike and head towards Riva del Garda. If you want to spend more time on bikes – go further to the Ponale road, and if you prefer water sports – stop in the center of Riva del Garda at the Sailing du Lac school and equipment rental. We have rented SUPs here before, and this year we decided to rent a boat with a skipper.
My tip is that if you are here for the first time, it is worth taking an instructor with you, because thanks to him you will learn a lot of interesting things about the wind itself, and you will also reach places you have no idea about.
After an active morning, we recommend eating in Leon d'Oro – in the center of Riva del Garda – or in Restaurant Ora if you want to head towards the campsite. We wrote more about these places in the article: "Where to eat on Lake Garda and Lake Ledro in Garda Trentino".
After lunch, hop on your bike towards Torbole. There is still a promenade and a bicycle path in this direction. In Torbole you will feel the real "dolce vita" by eating ice cream and drinking coffee in one of several cafes on the edge of the lake.
Before dinner, we recommend taking the elevator to the Riva del Garda Bastion. We didn't use it this year because the elevator was under renovation, but we were there last year. Plan some time upstairs for an aperitivo.
We recommend eating dinner at La Colombera, which is located quite close to Camping Brione.
