The charms of the province of Grosseto

Grosseto is both a town and a province located in the central part of Italy, in the Tuscany region. The area stretches from the slopes of the Colline Metallifere to the border with Lazio. There we will see the diverse landscape of the Maremma and the coastline between the Gulf of Follonica and the mouth of the Chiarone River. The province can be proud of a centuries-old history - its origins date back to the Middle Ages.

Until recently, Grosseto was considered the ugliest corner of Tuscany, as it was dominated by swamps and quagmire . It was only Mussolini who had the order to drain and cover the wetlands. Since then, the region has started to develop and expand. There are still plenty of wildlife spots there, such as the Parco Naturale della Maremma e Monti dell'Uccellina or the Laguna Orbetello Nature Reserve . The province of Grosseto is also full of historical artifacts, you can see the remains of Etruscan settlements , Spanish fortresses, and the ruins of Roman villas.

The coastline of the Province of Grosseto offers a beautiful panorama of pine forests and the crystal clear Tyrrhenian Sea . There are many famous resorts, such as Marina di Grosseto, Principina a Mare, Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala and Punta Talamone.

The tourist destinations of Grosseto, famous all over the world, are Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole . On the other hand, unspoiled landscapes and magnificent views dominate the nearby islands - Giglio , Giannutri and Formiche di Grosseto .

Inland, we can admire the Biancane Landscape Park . This is an area known for the natural, underground emission of white vapor from the depths of the earth (geothermal energy).

However, in the south-eastern part of the province, in the so-called "Tufo zone" , we will see unusual erosive phenomena, interesting settlements and very important Etruscan necropolises . The villages of this region are rich in amazing architectural monuments.

The provincial capital is Grosseto . It is worth seeing the Romanesque cathedral , the medieval church of San Francesco and the oldest sacred building - the Church of St. Peter . Castiglione della Pescaia , located by the sea, is considered the most beautiful town in the region, where it is worth seeing the picturesque old town and the church of St. Nicholas.
