During our trip, we touched the border with the United States several times. Now, however, we are heading directly towards it, to Chatham-Kent, a city that shares one of its lakes with the USA ( Lake St. Clair). The journey from Peterborough takes over four hours but we will make stops in some interesting towns along the way so understandably arrive later.

Oshawa, Kitchener, London and Chatham-Kent - we keep going!

We are over two hours' drive from Kingston to our next point, Peterborough, 237 km to be exact. On the way we will stop in Belleville, which notable buildings include the historic Gothic City Hall (Belleville City Hall) and the Glanmore National Historic Site, a museum restored in 2012. In case of a longer stay in the city, a visit to the Colonel Roscoe Vanderwater Conservation is a must area - is a recreational area where you can practice all kinds of sports all year round. And for the delight of the palate, be tempted to visit Prince Edward County. In recent years, the town has become a rising culinary star in the region. Some even say it's Ontario's culinary capital. After tasting the local dishes in one of the many cozy cafes or restaurants, you can agree. The city hosts food festivals, including "Harvestin 'supper" and "Six Barrels for Six Chefs." There are also many vineyards and organic farms, and talented chefs flock to the island from all over the region. In addition, music sounds everywhere - there are plenty of talented street artists.

Toward Peterborough

Wandering from the capital of Canada towards Lake Ontario, the smallest of the five Great Lakes of North America, we will encounter a small town called Smiths Falls along the way. Situated in a picturesque setting by the Rideau Canal and attracting tourists with a park of over 90 hectares, Smiths Falls is a delightful city with many attractions. You can go fishing, play tennis, sail and go hiking for hours. It is a modern town with the atmosphere of an old town, visited every year by thousands of tourists who want to see the famous Rideau Canal, which will be discussed later. For now, we must be satisfied with the information that it is the main attraction of the town.

A trip to Kingston

. After a good rest, it's time to move on to the rest of the journey. This time we are heading to the capital of Canada, the city of Ottawa. It is about 200 km from Montreal, and there are many interesting and worth seeing places along the way. Vankleek Hill, a town that organizes several nice festivals each year, is definitely a must. Step-dancing and Squaredancing Competition takes place here in July, Vankleek Hill Fair in August, and Victorian Christmas Home Tour in November. It is worth adding that the last festival is associated with the city's main attraction - magnificent Victorian -style houses . Tourists are also attracted by the beautiful murals that can be seen on the walls of historic buildings in the center.

Toward Ottawa

After saturating all senses with contact with the unspoiled nature in Réserve faunique des Laurentides, rested and happy, we can return to civilization. And Montreal itself is waiting for us - to get from Quebec to Montreal, we will have to cover 254 km. Montreal is the second largest city in Canada and the largest seaport in the eastern part of the country. It is situated on the island of the same name (Il de Montreal) and several smaller islets east of the confluence of the Ottawa and Saint Lawrence rivers.

After resting in beautiful Saint John , we can get ready to move on to the rest of the route - there are huge expanses of Canada ahead of us, waiting to be explored. Before leaving the city, however, it is worth paying some attention to its beautiful architecture and nature. Walking along the Bay of Fundy will calm everyone down, as will watching the hundreds of species of birds that live here and the waves crashing on the shores. Walking routes of the Irving Nature Park, the gorge of the Saint John River carved by the water or the Stonehammer Geopark recognized by UNESCO as a geological heritage are really worth seeing.

Some people think that although traveling with a camper is associated with independence, caravanning enthusiasts limit the limits. And they are not the borders of states, by no means - it is about the borders of continents. It is believed that if you are not a millionaire, the desire to visit Canada or the USA in a motorhome is only a dream. Meanwhile, it is not so. Admittedly, such a trip is not cheap, but with a little self-denial, saving skills and having organizational skills, you can spend a wonderful holiday overseas without having to take a loan.

From Halifax to Saint John - the beginning of the Canada tour

Motorized tourists have no major problems with organizing a quick trip abroad. Those without cars also, but in their case you have to become dependent on public transport and look at your watch more often. However, if you have your own vehicle, after about three hours you can be in the beautiful Slovak city of Žilina. It is a metropolis located in the north-west of Slovakia, at the confluence of three rivers - Kysuce, Rajčianka and Váh. Žilina is not a large city, but undoubtedly the largest in the north-central part of the country. It is also beautifully restored, especially its historic center, which was thoroughly rebuilt in 1990. The historic buildings in this district belong to a historic reserve.

Anyone who complains about the expensive public transport is probably envious of Tallinn's inhabitants. As a reminder, from January 2013, persons permanently registered in the capital of Estonia can travel by public means of transport for free . You only need to buy a special green card for 2 euros and activate it via the Internet. It is debatable whether such an idea has a chance of success in any of our cities (e.g. in Warsaw, much larger than Tallinn, with a population of 420,000), which does not change the fact that the vision of free communication sounds nice.

In Italy, in eastern Sicily, there is a resort with an extremely rich history. It is Syracuse, the city that St. Lucia, the patron saint of writers, the blind and those suffering from dysentery. The local group of monuments is so huge that the whole of Syracuse has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. It is completely understandable - at every step we encounter history here, one may even be tempted to say that it is in such places that our civilization was created. The past and the present are intertwined here, in the vicinity of the ruins from several centuries ago, we can see an intense flourishing of the city. An important element of Syracuse's economy is agricultural production (including the cultivation of almonds, olives and grapes) and two ports: Porto Grande and Porto Piccolo, connected by a canal separating Ortygia from the mainland.

As a well-known advertisement says, "almost" makes a big difference. Its motive is not being satisfied with the substitute, just something similar. Meanwhile, a similar one can be as satisfactory as the original one, especially when, apart from a copy of the original, it also has other, typical values only for itself. If someone dreams of a trip to Venice, he should consider a city as beautiful as Italian, and a bit closer - go on a small trip to the coast of Slovenia and visit Piran. It is so close to the border that you can visit Italy while visiting Italy, and at the same time it is so beautiful that it fully deserves attention. The architecture of the resort is reminiscent of the buildings of Venice, as in the past it was a Venetian fortress on the coast of Istria. Most of the delicious buildings date back to that time, as well as the massive walls that separate the city from the rest of the land.
