Liguria - relaxation on the Italian Riviera – main image

Liguria, a region in the northwest of Italy, is often referred to as the Italian Riviera. Lying in the Gulf of Genoa, on the Ligurian Sea, it stretches in a picturesque way between two mountain ranges - the Alps and the Apennines. The area owes its name to one of the oldest tribes in Italy - the Ligurians, who came to the country from North Africa. How to plan a visit to Liguria? What regional cuisine to try while traveling? We invite you to read!

Guide to the area

The capital of the region is Genoa, the atmosphere of which you will feel best while walking between the densely dotted streets that make up the old town. Among them, it is worth visiting the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Church of Gesu, whose walls are decorated with paintings by Rubens. From Rafaelle de Ferrari Square stretches a new part of the city, filled with fashion salons and equally trendy cafes. When visiting Genoa , sooner or later you will reach a great port, where there is also an aquarium with several hundred interesting species of marine animals. Portofino should be an important point when traveling in Liguria . The town, situated in the Gulf of Golfi del Tigullio, stands out for its colorfully packed houses, creating a postcard-like view. Monte di Portofino, a peak belonging to the Regional Park, is also not far from here. The trip would not be complete without a visit to the Cinque Terre , which brings together five spectacular towns - Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Monterosso, Manarola and Corniglia. Situated on steep cliffs, connected by a winding mountain path, they form the Cinque Terre National Park. Each town is delighted with its unique location and atmospheric buildings - it is worth staying here for longer. Sanremo, made famous by the Italian Song Festival, is also located in the region. Its central point is Piazza Coloma, and the oldest district - La Pigna, full of local bars.

Region on your plate

Among the inhabitants of Italy, Ligurians are famous as people closed to new products and using proven recipes for years. Fortunately - these recipes are so perfect that they will delight the most sophisticated tastes. Food in Liguria is based on fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs and gifts of the sea - always local. Regional crops and farms on steep mountain slopes play a huge role. The specialties of the kitchen include focaccia - a flat cake similar to bread, which was previously baked by the wives of sailors going on a cruise. It is often stuffed with cheese and onion and sprinkled with olive oil. The region also produces a unique pizza - all`Andrea, the roots of which go back to the city of Imperia. The spicy cake consists of anchovies and onion. Fish dishes are also popular, especially fish burrida soup and stuffed anchovies. A world famous product from Liguria is green pesto, made from basil, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan cheese. You can bring his jar from your holiday in Italy . For lovers of wine flavors, we recommend vermentino made in south-eastern Liguria.

Campsites in Liguria

We can recommend Camping Mare Monti , located east of Genoa, in Sestri Levante, to everyone who wants to camp in Italy . It will allow you to combine a pleasant stay close to nature with easy access to the main attractions of Liguria. It is not far from the aforementioned Cinque Terre or Portofino. There are 140 dedicated places for a motorhome or caravan and a number of places for shared use, including 2 swimming pools, hot showers, a bar, a mini-market and a laundry room. In the campsite you can use the Internet access. In high season, animations, performances and dance evenings are organized for children and adults. The nearby restaurant will allow you to taste the best regional dishes. We highly recommend it!

I like closer and longer journeys - with an analog camera and a great appetite, because I always like to get to know the local cuisine during the trip. My favorite region in Europe is the Balkans, especially Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia with Herzegovina, which I have visited several times. I dream of returning to beautiful and unpredictable Iceland. I am currently in Southeast Asia.

Places to visit
At the very end of the heel
The region of Apulia, which forms the "heel" of Italy, is an area that is still and still flourishing in terms of tourism. Almost 800 km of beautiful coast, jagged by cliffs and covered with sandy beaches of the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea, are visited by more and more tourists every year. It is a perfect place for a vacation, both for people who love solitary trips in the wild, and for those for whom vacation is a time of family rest on the shores of the warm sea. The main city and capital of Apulia is Bari . In antiquity, the center was an important seaport, and today it is the industrial, cultural and commercial center of this part of the country. Due to the fact that tourists planning holidays in Italy are more and more willing to visit the southern areas, the regions lying along the foot and with the heel of the famous Cossack are experiencing a dynamic development. Apart from Bari, Brindisi and Lecce are also worth recommending. The first town is a port city full of life. When visiting Brindisi , it is worth remembering to visit one of the restaurants in the old part of the city and get to know, among others, "Pettuli" (fried dough stuffed with vegetables or seafood) or "Cozze racanate" (beans with clams). Lecce , on the other hand, is a mecca for those who love the baroque, but the historic sacred and secular buildings will delight not only architecture enthusiasts. The large centers of the region are beautiful and of course recommendable, but the main charm of Apulia lies in the small towns. Intimate coastal settlements and villages located in the middle of the inland have stolen the heart of many tourists. No wonder - visitors find peace here, the friendliness of the inhabitants who cultivate the best traditions and delicious regional dishes based on old recipes. Attachment to tradition is clearly visible, for example, in the way in which cultural events, festivals or the intensity of celebrating holidays are organized.
