It is a "bridge" connecting the southern and northern parts of Italy, an area located in central Italy. Abruzzo is made up of four provinces: L'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara and Teramo. The region is famous for its beautiful coast and mountains, as well as interesting monuments and picturesque hiking trails. In antiquity, today's Abruzzo was inhabited by Italian tribes , but in 304 BC the region was taken over by the Romans . However, in the 7th century, the Lombards ruled there. In the 12th century, this area was assigned to the Kingdom of Sicily , and the Normans took over the power. In 1240, Emperor Frederick II founded the present-day capital of the region - L'Aquila . Over the next centuries, Abruzzo was still ruled by the Spaniards and the Bourbons . In 1861, the region became part of the united Kingdom of Italy.
