Pays de la Loire at a glance

The name of the region comes from the Loire, the main river that crosses it and which largely shapes its landscape. In total, there are as many as 18,000 kilometers of waterways. The landscape is enriched with small hills – the highest peak, Mont des Avaloirs, rises to a height of 417 meters. At a length of 368 meters, the Pays de la Loire borders the Atlantic Ocean, encompassing two main islands: Île de Noirmoutier and Île d'Yeu. The shores are alternately rocky and sandy.

Castles in the Loire

Tourists associate the Pays de la Loire mainly with castles – and no wonder, because there are nearly 3,000 of them here! The unusual density of monuments in this region made the Loire Valley a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Interestingly, the castles on the Loire create the largest concentration of this type of monuments in the world. Some of the most beautiful castles in the Loire Valley are located, among others, in Blois, Chambord, Chenonceaux, Azay-le-Rideau or Rigny-Ussé.
